Safe Use of Electricity
Each year defective wiring or appliances cause about 9000 fires in homes. Recent surveys show that over 2 million homes in the UK need some kind of electrical repair. Older houses are especially at risk. There are also 2000 injuries and 30 deaths from electrocution in the home, many of which are due to DIY and amateur repairs. That is why the institution of Electrcial Engineers reccomends that domestic installations are examined by a qualified electrician.
To ensure your safety, your electrical installation should be regularly tested and inspected to British Standards BS7671: 1992 - IEE Wiring Regulations 16th Edition, at least every 10 years for new homes, depending on usage.
Look out for Warning Signs of Dangerous Wiring
Hot plugs and sockets or scorch marks. Fuses that blow for no obvious reason and old style fuse boards with rewireable fuses, lights flickering, extension leads and adaptors used because of lack of socket outlets.
