LOCAL SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY

JC Electrics in line with the company’s purpose seeks to deliver its projects in a manner that causes least harm to the environment and achieves environmental benefits. It is our policy to develop an environmentally aware workforce and to avoid unnecessary risks to our employees, others who may be affected by our work activities and the environment.

INCREASING RECYLING AND RE-USE
There are lots of reasons why recycling makes sense. Overall it saves resources, including energy, and helps divert potentially valuable materials away from landfill sites. By supporting your local recycling centre you can actively help the environment.

JC Electrics actively recycles all recyclable products where possible, For example, we rewire many hundreds of properties per year, which leaves ourselves with the need to dispose of old cables etc. We have a facility in place where we recycle these items to a local business, for disposal.
Awareness of disposal of personal waste such as newspapers, packaging materials, and plastic bottles has been brought to the forefront with our staff, and we actively seek to recycle all personal waste wherever possible.

JC Electrics makes every effort where possible to purchase recycled products, and to encourage our sub-contractors to do the same. We understand that by choosing recycled products in preference to non-recycled items, we can help 'close the recycling loop'.
Whilst individual purchasing actions may often seem small, collectively as a business JC Electrics are sending an important signal to manufacturers that people do want to buy recycled products.
In pursuit of the above there are lots of reasons why recycling makes sense. Overall it saves resources, including energy, and helps divert potentially valuable materials away from landfill

REDUCING WASTE PRODUCTION
Our company like others within the Construction industry, is now being forced by legislation to take responsibility for the waste that we generate. This can range from our office waste, right through to waste on site.

Legislation, coupled with ever increasing costs associated with waste disposal and increasing Landfill Tax, means that waste is more and more a major issue for the construction industry. JC Electrics actively pursue a waste minimization programme, which looks at the whole of our business – from what we buy from our suppliers, to construction, right through to disposal. Our company has looked at the various ways that we can reduce waste within our business. Some examples can be as simple as procedures within the office, such as buying recycled paper, making note pads from scrap paper, saving files to disk rather than hard copy, and re-using manila envelopes. All very simple examples but affective.

On our construction sites, there are various ways that are just as affective, for example ordering merchandise with minimal packaging, either in concentrated form, or in bulk. Wood waste can be shredded for re-use by chipboard manufacturers and garden waste can be used as compost. We can request that materials we order be supplied in returnable containers. We can return, reuse, and repair wooden pallets. Even such a simple action, as using rechargeable batteries can be very affective way in looking after our environment.

Whilst individual purchasing actions may often seem small, collectively as a business JC Electrics are sending an important signal to manufacturers that businesses do want to buy recycled products.

REDUCING WATER USE
The Water Resources Act 1991 makes it an offence to discharge anything other than rainwater into surface water drains and controlled waters without consent from the regulator, eg the Environment Agency in England and Wales.

JC Electrics accepts the above legislation to be an important consideration within the government’s environmental policies, and that the principle of water efficiency and re-use should be considered wherever possible.

Our company promotes such items as low flow showers and high efficiency appliances to be specified where possible.

GREEN PURCHASING
Green purchasing is a valuable part of the local sustainability strategy that JC Electrics looks into providing. There are many areas of the business that can use green products. Durable goods and products with little or no packaging, pump action non-aerosol sprays, phosphate free soaps and detergents, chlorine free cleaners through to timber products that carry a FSC stamp. Fair trade products and ecolabelled goods are a clear, visible way of noticing green products that our business can purchase.

JC Electrics actively encourages the purchasing of products such as above that have less impact on the environment. This can be applied to any products we purchase, from food, office supplies, construction items and cleaning products. It can also apply to other types of purchases such as services from sub-contractors and utility suppliers.

JC Electrics will work with our customers and suppliers to increase the range of "green" products available for our use within our sites.

REDUCING UNEMPLOYMENT
JC Electrics, being a local company that has grown in size with the commitment and loyalty of our employees, we actively encourage the employment of local labour in the South Wales area.
Our Pencoed based company encourages taking on persons that will optimize our companies training arrangements that are in place.

Our company encourages all employees to utilize apprenticeships, training courses, NVQ’s, CSCS cards and certificates available to the construction industry. We utilize local training companies such as the construction industry training board ‘C.I.T.B. and JTL.

INCREASING CONSUMPTION OF LOCAL GOODS
JC Electrics encourages the purchase of everyday goods and services produced locally, which are available close to our construction sites. By ensuring that this is of paramount importance to our company, we are actively encouraging businesses within our locality to prosper and thrive on partnerships with our local clients.

We can then take this one stage further and set up supply chain partnership agreements with local suppliers/manufactures. This will ensure that all parties gain as much as possible out of the agreement in terms of profit, and of course having a long term sales forecast in place, which businesses can build upon and encourage similar partnerships with other customers within the locality.

JC Electrics will ensure that all sub-contractors are encouraged to set up local supply chain partnerships with local suppliers/manufacturers. This will ensure that our efforts are encouraged, and hopefully profitability for these parties will increase, guaranteed employment and firm work will encourage dedicated workmanship from local companies that we work well with, thus forming successful partnerships with local sub-contractors.

INCREASING INVESTMENT IN THE LOCAL ECONOMY
Investment with the local economy is encouraged within JC Electrics. Every effort has been and will be made, to form close links with the businesses within our community. Partnerships formed by our company with local businesses can only encourage increased investment in the local economy; thus increasing profitability, growth and secure employment for their future.

SUMMARY OF JC ELECTRICS COMMITMENT TO ACHIEVING AND ENCOURAGING A LOCAL SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY
JC Electrics is making a commitment to actively encourage all points raised within this strategy. By reducing, reusing and recycling our waste, and by encouraging local employment and the purchasing of local goods, through Partnering, JC Electrics can make all the difference.
